40 Years of Beauty

Not ten , or twenty, or thirty, forty years have passed since the birth in the cosmopolitan capital of London  , of who would become one day in one of the most influential and best-paid models in the world, a new icon of beauty who broke the standards of what was considered a beautiful woman of her time , and last but not least , she is also worldwide known for her style, a style that still today we still admire, for a day like today , 16 January 1974 , Kate Moss opened her eyes for the first time.

Ni diez, ni veinte, ni treinta, cuarenta años han pasado ya desde el nacimiento en la cosmopolita capital de Londres, de la que un día se convertiría en una de las modelos más influyentes y mejor pagadas del mundo, un nuevo icono de belleza que rompió los cánones de lo que se consideraba una mujer hermosa de su época, y que por si fuera poco, es también mundialmente conocida por su estilo, un estilo que todavía a día de hoy nos sigue cautivando; porque tal día como hoy, un 16 de enero de 1974, abría por primera vez los ojos Kate Moss.

Currently the population of the world is divided into two : those who idolize her and who see her as a kind of abomination. And every step taken by this celebrated fashion and beauty icon, on which everyone has ever spoken about it , always has been accompanied by some controversy.

Actualmente la población del mundo se encuentra dividida en dos: los que la idolatran y los que la ven como una especie de abominación. Y es que cada paso que ha dado este célebre icono de moda y belleza, sobre el cual todo el mundo se ha pronunciado alguna vez al respecto, siempre ha venido acompañado de cierta polémica.

Anyone who knows me personally is aware of the admiration I feel for Kate Moss , is that forgetting for a moment the numerous scandals that has carried throughout her career , the contribution of this woman to the fashion world  and even the world in general) , it goes far beyond being one of the most prolific models (from very young) in the history, having been on the cover of any publication or magazine that price, having covered the best catwalks of the world by the hand of the most influential designers of the moment, being the image of the most emblematic and powerful firms , and even have been the inspiration for a whole generation of artists. I say this because the fact of the triumph of Moss as a cover woman and beauty model to follow, meant at the time, a revolution both within the world of fashion and society in general.

Cualquiera que me conozca en persona es consciente de la admiración que siento por Kate Moss, y es que olvidándonos por un instante de los numerosos escándalos que ha protagonizado a lo largo de su carrera, la aportación de esta mujer al mundo de la moda (e incluso al mundo en general), va mucho más allá de ser una de las modelos más prolíficas (desde bien jovencita) de la historia, de haber sido portada de cualquier publicación o revista que se precie, de haber recorrido las mejores pasarelas del mundo de la mano de los diseñadores más influyentes del momento, de haber sido imagen de las firmas más emblemáticas y poderosas, e incluso de haber sido la fuente de inspiración para toda una generación de artistas. Y digo esto porque el hecho del triunfo de Moss como mujer de portada  y modelo de belleza a seguir, supuso en su día, toda una revolución tanto dentro del mundo de la moda como en la sociedad en general.

In the days when Kate took her first steps as a model, catwalk queens were those 90s women , characterized by enormous natural beauty and their prominent curves, they were the "Venus" of our day . But on the other hand was Kate Moss , with her 164cm of height, lazy eye and knobby knees , a complete "anti- model " for the time. The success of Kate ( which still exists ) involved a complete change of mind, the established canon of beauty began to be questioned and resulted in an evolutionary process , nowdays we can see that looking the models who appear in our favourites magazines.

En los tiempos en los que Kate daba sus primeros pasos como modelo, las reinas de la pasarela eran aquellas mujeres de los 90, caracterizadas por su descomunal belleza natural y sus prominentes curvas, ellas eran la "Venus" de nuestros días. Pero por otro lado estaba Kate Moss, con su 164cm de altura, un ojo vago y de rodillas huesudas, una completa "anti-modelo" para la época. El éxito de Kate (que aún perdura) supuso todo un cambio de mentalidad, el canon de belleza establecido empezó a cuestionarse y se dio lugar a un proceso evolutivo, que hoy podemos apreciar a simple vista al contemplar como son las modelos que ocupan las portadas de nuestras revistas favoritas.

90s Models

Without touching the controversy about the thinness of the current models (which is the thing that burns ) , thanks by representatives of models like Sarah Daukas ( founder of Storm models) who discovered Kate at her 14 years at the international airport John F. Kennedy and believed in her from the beginning and has been a pioneer in the search for new faces to the industry, today the canon of what is considered a beautiful woman is not defined , more alternative faces are sought, exotic beauties and different beauties , women who have a "Je ne sais quoi " , women with traits that after being considered by many to have been ugly to want to be imitated and considered as exceptional , different ... Traits that break stereotypes and remind us that not only the " goddesses " or 90-60-90 women, undeniably beautiful by nature 90 are beautiful women, but there are many different types of beauty, because if a time we stopped criticizing those " thin " or " ugly " girls for many, as we would realize how the industry of fashion gives the opportunity to succeed that otherwise faces that had never imagined being models of anyway. Because we´re not talking about being beautiful by birth as it was then , now we talk about being different , I think people should finsh to use the story of the "real woman " because if we do not engage with the thinness of the current , we 'd get to the beauty of the before exposing ideas like these women are so beautiful but not real women, saying that they´re exceptions. Because .. What would be of Cara Delevigne´s eyebrows , Georgia May Jagger´s teeth, or the peculiar face of Lara Stone, very characteristic features of women considered as examples of beauty (sorry to repeat this word both along the post) , if the society has would not changed? Shall we say then that these girls-models are less beautiful than the blonde bombshell prototype like Pamela Anderson in its heyday?

Sin tocar la polémica acerca de la delgadez de las modelos actuales (que está la cosa que arde), gracias a representantes de modelos como Sarah Daukas (fundadora de Storm models) que descubrió a Kate a sus 14 años en el aeropuerto internacional John F. Kennedy y que creyó en ella desde el primer momento y que ha sido pionera en la búsqueda de nuevos rostros para la industria, hoy en día el canon de lo que se considera una mujer bella no está definido, cada vez se buscan más rostros alternativos, bellezas exóticas y bellezas distintas, mujeres que tienen un "Je ne sais quoi", mujeres con rasgos que tras ser considerados por muchos como feos han pasado a querer ser imitados y reivindicados como algo excepcional, diferente... Rasgos que rompen con los estereotipos y que nos recuerdan que no sólo las "diosas", las mujeres 90-60-90 o las innegablemente hermosas por naturaleza de los 90 son mujeres bellas, sino que hay muchos tipos diferentes de belleza, porque si por un  momento dejáramos de criticar a esas chicas "delgadas" o "feas" para muchos, nos daríamos cuenta de como la industria cobija y da la oportunidad de triunfar a rostros que en otras circunstancias no se hubieran imaginado ser modelos ni de lejos. Por que ya no hablamos de ser guapa por nacimiento como era entonces, ahora hablamos de ser diferente, basta del cuento de la "mujer real", porque si no nos metemos con la delgadez de las actuales, nos meteríamos con la belleza de las de antes, exponiendo ideas como la de que esas mujeres tan guapas tampoco son reales sino excepciones.  Porque.. ¿Qué sería de las cejas de Cara Delevigne, los dientes de Georgia May Jagger, o el peculiar rostro de Lara Stone, rasgos muy característicos de mujeres consideradas como ejemplos de belleza (perdonad que repita esta palabra tanto a lo largo del post), si la sociedad no hubiera cambiado? ¿Diríamos entonces que son menos bellas que el prototipo rubia explosiva tipo Pamela Anderson en sus tiempos de gloria?
