Interview with Hannibal Laguna (March 2013)

Friends, forgive the delay, know perfectly that everything good is worth waiting for, even if we combine it with the mess I am, the result could be fatal, many of you probably thought that this interview would never be posted on my page, and although it does half a month of delay, finally here's our issue of March, an issue that had to be special obligation to commemorate our first anniversary, and boy, what's it, ladies and gentlemen, that this month we have a luxury collaboration, our interviewee for this occasion is none other than the king of the night, one of the great of Spanish gateway and whose talent is recognized worldwide, even if you do not fall in the account, so is, we're talking about the designer Hannibal Laguna.

Amigos , perdonad el retraso , sabéis perfectamente que todo lo bueno se hace esperar , aunque si a esto lo unimos lo desastre que soy , el resultado podría ser fatal, probablemente muchos de vosotros pensasteis que esta entrevista jamás llegaría a estar publicada en mi página , y aunque lo hace con medio mes de retraso , finalmente aquí esta nuestro número del mes de Marzo, una edición que por obligación tenía que ser especial en conmemoración a nuestro primer aniversario , ¡y vaya si lo es!, por que damas y caballeros este mes contamos con una colaboración de lujo , nuestro entrevistado para esta ocasión no es otro que el rey de la noche , uno de los grandes de la pasarela española y cuyo talento es reconocido a escala mundial, por si todavía no caéis en la cuenta , así es , estamos hablando del diseñador Hannibal Laguna.

Before you begin to read and reread the interview, I have to warn the authorities warn of its high addictive, lovesick and exciting content, glad to see the effort that has been Hannibal answer each of the questions. I just hope to profit the opportunity to learn all you ought to know, or at least in part, on a designer is as famous as Hannibal Laguna:

Antes de que empecéis a leer y releer la entrevista ,tengo que advertiros que las autoridades advierten de su alto contenido adictivo , enamoradizo y emocionante; da gusto ver el empeño que Hannibal ha puesto en responder cada una de las preguntas. Sólo espero que aprovechéis la ocasión para conocer todo lo que deberíais de saber , o al menos en parte, sobre un diseñador tan célebre como lo es Hannibal Laguna:

1. Whence comes or when did your passion for fashion and design?

1.¿De dónde viene o cuándo comenzó tu pasión por la moda y el diseño?

From my childhood I remember playing with scraps of fabric from my mother's factory, used them to build models of cities, with the tissues of pictures "vichy" to the buildings and the flower prints to gardens.

Desde mi infancia recuerdo jugar con  retales de tejido de la fabrica de mi madre, los utilizaba para construir maquetas de ciudades, con los tejidos de cuadros “vichy” hacia los edificios y con los de flores los jardines.

2.Have you always known what you wanted to spend?

2.¿Has tenido siempre clara tu vocación?

Family tradition understand fashion as a business and not as a means of creative expression, so I was more interested in architecture, then in my teens I realized that I needed to express my emotions moving elements and discovered that fashion was the perfect medium , but I needed to prepare me technically, so I trip to Italy to study tailoring, from the time I enjoy my work intensely.

Por tradición familiar entendía la moda como una empresa y no como un medio de expresión creativo, por lo que me interesaba más la arquitectura, después en mi adolescencia comprendí que para expresar mis emociones necesitaba  elementos en movimiento y descubrí que la moda era el medio perfecto, pero necesitaba prepárame técnicamente, por lo que viaje a Italia y estudie sastrería, a partir de ese momento disfruto intensamente con mi trabajo.

3.What are your sources of inspiration?

3.¿Cuáles son tus fuentes de inspiración?

Every detail however small may be the starting point for a collection, a song, a painting, even an attitude, the creative process has two fundamental parameters, one technical and one emotional, the technical outlines silhouettes, color, combination of textures and finishes late, the emotional defined above, my head outlines the concept but it certainly is the heart that finally gives way.

Cualquier detalle por pequeño que sea puede ser el punto de partida de una colección, una canción, un cuadro, incluso una actitud, El Proceso creativo  tiene dos parámetros fundamentales, uno técnico y otro emocional, el técnico perfila las siluetas, el color, la combinación de texturas y los acabados finales, el emocional define todo lo anterior,  mi cabeza perfila el concepto pero sin duda es el corazón el que finalmente le da forma.

4.Why Spain as a country in which to establish your signature?

4.¿Por qué España como país para establecer tu marca?

Circumstances of fate. I'm half  Valenciano and half Andalusian, my family decided to move to Spain in '82, my first collection the design here and was awarded the Air France and Paco Rabanne selected to represent Spain in the international exhibition "Europe in USA" I think this was a sign.

Circunstancias del destino. Soy mitad Valenciano y mitad Andaluz, mi familia decidió establecerse en España en el 82, mi primera colección la diseñe aqui y fue galardonada con el premio Air France y seleccionada por Paco Rabanne para representar a España en el salón internacional “Europe in USA”, creo que esto fue una señal.

5.What is your view about the current Spanish fashion?

5.¿Cuál es tu punto de vista acerca de la moda Española en la actualidad?

The Spanish fashion today is present across the globe thanks in part to the low-cost brands, obviously speaking of designer creations, there is still some way to go, we need to institutionalize the synergies between industry and creation, is the big challenge. But Madrid is the fashion platform "Spanish" most important in the world. I think we're experiencing a booming time for needlework in Spain, we recover the tradition of the old Ateliers, may be an alternative response to the excessive luxury globalization of large firms engaged for some years. It is wonderful to find creators who develop their collections in a real way, to be enjoyed and admired not only is a fashionable view much more personal and close relationship with the end customer, which ultimately is the essence of our work.

La moda española hoy esta presente en todo el planeta gracias entre otras a las marcas low-cost, evidentemente si hablamos de diseño de autor, todavía queda mucho camino por recorrer, nos falta institucionalizar las sinergias entre  industria y creación, es el gran reto. Sin embargo Madrid es la plataforma de moda en “español” más importante del mundo. Creo que estamos viviendo un momento floreciente para la costura en España, hemos recuperando la tradición de los antiguos Ateliers, quizás sea una  respuesta alternativa a la excesiva  globalización del lujo que ejercen las grandes firmas desde hace unos años. Es maravilloso poder encontrar creadores que desarrollan sus colecciones de forma real, para ser disfrutadas y no solo admiradas, es una visión de  moda mucho mas personal y cercana con el cliente final, que en definitiva es la esencia de nuestro trabajo.

6.How is the Hannibal Laguna client?

6.¿Cómo es la clienta de Hannibal Laguna?

There are three words that define, Romantic, Subtle and Sophisticated, are the keys to my style.

Hay tres palabras que la definen, Romántica, Sutil y Sofisticada,  son las claves de mi estilo.

7.Which is essential in the wardrobe of a woman?

7.¿Qué es esencial en el armario de toda mujer?

In this century there are dictatorships aesthetic carries virtually everything and everyone that with which we identify ourselves, I do not favor general advice on a wardrobe. The needs of a university is not the same as a rock singer, but if you were to invest, you would in timeless pieces, those that reflect the past and are always in fashion, 40 and 50 are a good reference, of course combined with very modern fittings.

En este siglo ya no existen dictaduras estéticas, prácticamente se lleva todo y cada uno buscamos aquello con lo que nos identificamos, no soy partidario de consejos generales sobre un fondo de armario. Las necesidades de una universitaria no son las mismas que las de una cantante de Rock, pero si tuviera que  invertir, lo haría en piezas intemporales, aquellas que son reflejo de otras épocas y que siempre están de moda, los años 40 y 50 son un buen referente, por supuesto combinadas con accesorios muy actuales.

8.How would you define the Hannibal Laguna style?

8.¿Cómo definirías el estilo de Hannibal Laguna?

I like to seduce elegantly above trends and fads, look aesthetic paths that define the beauty of natural and last over time. When I finish a design and does not meet these values, simply withdraw from my collection. Do not throwaway pieces, I have no interest in offering every six months as opposed to the above. I like to be consistent with my work and the people who identify with.

Me gusta seducir con elegancia por encima de tendencias y modas, busco  caminos estéticos que definan  la belleza de forma natural y perduren en el tiempo. Cuando termino un diseño y no responde a estos valores, simplemente lo retiro de mi colección. No hacemos piezas de usar y tirar, no tengo interés en ofrecer cada seis meses lo opuesto a lo anterior. Me gusta ser coherente con mi trabajo y con las personas que se identifican con el.

9.Which elements are never missing in your collections?

9.¿Qué elementos no faltan nunca en tus colecciones?

Sculptural lines, profiles romantic and feminine silhouettes, with bare shoulders, waists and volumes notched circular cut on the bias, all spiced with large doses of natural silks.

Líneas escultóricas, perfiles románticos y siluetas femeninas, con hombros al descubierto, cinturas entalladas y volúmenes circulares  cortados al bies; todo aderezado con grandes dosis de sedas naturales. 

10.Do you plan to parade outside the MBFW Madrid?

10.¿Tienes planeado desfilar fuera de la MBFW Madrid?

We have several collaborations proposals for 2014, but as yet are not firm, I can not overtake.

Tenemos varias propuestas de colaboraciones puntuales para el 2014, pero como todavía no son en firme, no puedo adelantarlo.

11.Who are your fashion icons to follow?

11.¿Quiénes son tus iconos de la moda a seguir?

I admire many artists, Balenciaga, Dior, Vionett, Armani, Paco Rabanne, among others, we believe that each provides a different view of fashion, as with other artists try to learn from the techniques of his work.

Admiro a muchos creadores, Balenciaga, Dior,  Vionett, Armani, Paco Rabanne, entre otros, creo que cada uno nos aporta una visión diferente de la moda, al igual que con otros artistas intento aprender de las técnicas  de su trabajo.

12.Who are your muses?

12.¿Quiénes son tus musas?

Nostalgic women,film women , with character; women aware that in life there are special moments to enjoy magical dresses where every detail has meaning.

Mujeres nostálgicas, cinematográficas, con carácter; mujeres conscientes que en la vida hay momentos especiales para disfrutar de vestidos mágicos en donde cada detalle tiene un sentido.

13.How artists, models and photographers would you like to work with?

13.¿Con qué artistas , modeos y fotógrafos te gustaría trabajar?

I have worked with many, enjoy the same with the novel and the new face, which consecrated persons provide important insights both me about my work.

He trabajado con muchísimos, disfruto igual con los noveles y las new face, que con los consagrados, ambos me aportan visiones importantes sobre mi trabajo.

15.What characterizes your personal style?

15.¿Qué caracteriza tu estilo personal?

I think it is similar to the professional, the two live together and drink from the same sources.

Creo que es similar al profesional, los dos conviven juntos y beben de las mismas fuentes.

16.When I am talking about Hannibal Laguna , I always guess stunning and ultra-feminine evening dresses , what does unite you to this type of garment?

16.Siempre que me hablan de Hannibal Laguna , me imagino impresionantes y ultra-femeninos vestido de noche , ¿qué te une a este tipo de prenda?

The night has a special magic that allows me to work by hand with fine materials and exquisite finishes, I have much more freedom to interpret the dreams of a woman and try to make them a reality.

La noche tiene una magia especial porque me permite  trabajar de forma artesanal con materiales nobles y acabados exquisitos,  tengo mucha más libertad para interpretar los sueños de una mujer e intentar hacerlos realidad. 

17.How and at what times are you most inspired to design?

17.¿Cómo y en qué momentos estás más inspirado para diseñar?

I feel really relaxed in the late evening, I start to design from seven, but never know when I'll finish, I let the ideas sleep and if the next day I still thrilling is the sign that they are good.

Me encuentro realmente relajado  por la tarde noche, comienzo a diseñar a partir de las siete, pero nunca se cuando voy a terminar, dejo que las ideas duerman y si al día siguiente me siguen emocionando es la señal  de  que son buenas. 

18. Is it possible for you to return to design menswear?

18.¿Cabe la posibilidad de que vuelvas a diseñar moda para hombre?

I already do, I have a wonderful collection of tailoring and grooms. Men's fashion is exciting, I really wanted to design for man accompanying the woman HL, is a collection of classic tailoring designed for special occasions, are structured and very comfortable dresses in stretch fabrics drapery, the details are exquisite, from the interior finishes to the color range, you can choose up to five different shades of black depending on the color of the skin, because all black tones are not equal.

Ya lo hago, tengo una maravillosa colección de sastrería y novios. La moda masculina es apasionante, me apetecía mucho diseñar para el hombre que acompaña a la mujer HL; es una colección de sastrería clásica pensada para ocasiones especiales, son trajes estructurados y muy cómodos en tejidos de pañeria strech, los detalles son exquisitos, desde los acabados interiores hasta la gama de color, podemos escoger hasta  cinco tonos de negro diferente dependiendo del color de la piel, porque todos los negros no son iguales.

19. Which is essential in a good evening dress?

19.¿Qué es esencial en un buen vestido de noche?

For me there is no ideal dress, but if the perfect result, and this depends on the time and the woman who wears it. A good cut and exceptional fabric help, but the important thing is to feel what it takes as his own, and is achieved when they first saw the soul and then the body.

Para mi no existe el vestido ideal, pero si el resultado perfecto, y esto depende del momento y de la mujer que lo viste. Un buen corte y un tejido excepcional ayuda, pero lo importante es sentir lo que se lleva como propio, y se consigue cuando primero se viste el alma y luego el cuerpo.

20.Why did you agree to do this interview?

20.¿Por qué aceptaste hacer esta entrevista?

Because I answer absolutely every serious and interesting interviews, maybe that's why I'm late with many of them. It gives me immense respect that half wants to know my opinion or my thinking.

Porque contesto absolutamente todas las entrevistas serias e interesantes, quizás por eso no llego a tiempo con muchas de ellas. Me produce un inmenso respeto que un medio quiera conocer mi opinión o mi forma de pensar.
